A Summary of Current Crimebeat Schemes

ACTIVAS Project Falmouth

Funding £450

This project is based at Falmouth Community School and is working to produce a Drugs Awareness Mural at the college with a view to converting the mural into posters etc.

Falmouth Community College

Funding £350

A group of students of the Falmouth Community College have formed a travelling drama group exploring the issues which affect youth and the local community. Their project takes social issues into schools using the medium of drama to provoke open discussion.

Hayle Community School

Funding £110

Young people from the Hayle Community School formed a Crimebeat Team to take on the problems experienced at their local Youth Club which was in a poor state of decoration, thus encouraging ongoing problems of vandalism and neglect. Their scheme included decorating the club and making it a better environment for members to enjoy, thus exercising a greater degree of respect for the premises which reduced the problems at the site.

Launceston Youth Project

Funding £300

Young people from the Launceston area formed a Crimebeat Team to take on the problems of converting a facility at their local Youth Club premises which was in a poor state of decoration, thus encouraging ongoing problems of vandalism and neglect. Their scheme included decorating the activities and art / photography area of the building and making it a better environment for members to enjoy, thus exercising a greater degree of respect for the premises which reduced the problems at the site. The young people engaged in the project use the premises as a drop-in centre, it is used by young people who are excluded from school, young people working with the Millennium and other volunteering projects and those who require art therapy in partnership with counselling agencies. This is a project part funded by Cornwall Crimebeat with match-funding from the High Sheriff’s fund.

Newquay Street Safe Bus Project

Funding £100

This project is based in Newquay town during the summer season when young people are at their most vulnerable. It will provide a safe haven bus for young people to go to for a refuge from problems. The bus will be manned by trained staff in partnership with numerous agencies including he Police and St John’s Ambulance staff. The project supported by Crimebeat is to provide funding for two radios for the staff on the bus, which are connected to the local town system and police station for safety and emergency use.

Penryn College Garden Project

Funding £500 with The Garden Society

This project wishes to get young people at risk of offending into the idea of being involved in a gardening project in partnership with the Cornwall Gardening Society Charity.

Penryn Dance Club

Funding £100 plus loan of camera

A group from Year 10 at Poltair Community School and Sports College at St Austell organised themselves into a team to paint and brighten up an area of their local nursery school. They painted a large mural and generally tidied the area to make a more comfortable and safer environment for the young children.

Award Scheme Project

Funding £418.83

This project involved funding some expedition equipment for young people based at the Redruth Youth Club in order to engage them in a worthwhile activity outside of the school environment.

Redruth Graffiti

This project is to involved youg people in the town in a positive manner to steer them away from offending and anti social behaviou by painting a restoring vandalised areas in the town.

Roseland Community School

Funding £350

The aim of this project is to produce an Anti-Bullying leaflet to distribute around the primary and secondary schools within the Roseland peninsula. They have identified that many children in year 6 at primary school are worried about being bullied when they move up to secondary school in year 7. Their project is an effort to reduce bullying and the fear of bullying. The team intends visiting schools giving presentations to pupils about bullying issues and the help that is available to sufferers. They also wish to target the bullies themselves and to attempt to change their outlook and views about bullying. The team wishes to produce 2,500 leaflets in order to keep the project running for successive years.

St Piran Police Project

Funding £250

This project is being run by the 6 Youth Issues Managers from the county and involves engaging young people in physical activities at awareness days.
